"Banana Leaf as placemat and plate...In Singapore (via Tamarind ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-07 09:17:00

The French Guy from New Jersey: Serge Lescouarnec alias Serge the Concierge shares information on Food. Wine. Travel and Life TidBits. He also runs 'New Jersey Concierges' We get so used to our way of doing things that we forget that it can be done differently. Some restaurants use placemats. In Singapore and I am sure many banana growing countries the banana leaf replaces both placemat and plate (the illustration tells it all) in some restaurants as I learned in by Su-Lin on Tamarind and Thyme. It reminded me of my first experience with Ethiopian food where forks and spoons were not part of the equation. As makes clear the flatbread served with an Ethiopian meal is also your eating ustensil. Going back to my early years at the local Creperie the plain Galette de Ble Noir was used a bit in the same way to fetch the Lait Caille (curdled milk). I have made little progress at using chopsticks since my for the opening. Maybe something to do with dinner at home (out the public glare). "Renay?s Speculative Fiction Challenge" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 08:44:53

I’m going to be joining Renay’s But I promised myself a few weeks ago that I would only join challenges if I could overlap with the (already 60+) books that I have picked out for other 2008 challenges. So I emailed Renay my huge enumerate of books and she picked out seven that could be considered speculative fiction. I’d already started reading one and didn’t like it so I deleted that and now have six books the exact number I be for the Speculative Fiction contend. Here they are: overlap and Enjoy:These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. It’s too bad that I’ve just heard about it. I would have liked to join especially since it has a later closing date than most of the others appearing around this time. Wish I hadn’t read that. Don’t be to join another challenge but this might be too big a temptation for me. I love speculative fiction. Do you think “Life of Pi” qualifies? I love. LOVE that book but I never thought of it that way. Hmm. I hope you read it and like it anyway. So naturally I want to know which one you picked up and discarded. I really liked Life of Pi and I never ever would have read it if it hadn’t been a book club choice. "Oriental Leaf Vegetable Collection" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-13 22:33:49

Finally took delivery of the oriental leaf collection this evening. The first delivery should undergo go weeks ago but Royal send seem to undergo lost it for a while and the first lot arrived dead. Dobies to their credit sent out another group which only took a week to come so we set about getting them in the ground straight away. The brassicas are coming along really well apart from a couple of slug casualties and are easy to maintain thanks to the weed suppressing fabric we used. We decided to use more of the fabric for the orientals so got ourselves a big roll. Three of us spent an hour down there tonight and now undergo seven new rows to tend. "Veiny Leaf Earrings" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-21 17:48:27

The detail that comes out on these leaves is just incredible. Each earring is a sheet of soft lightweight aluminum that has been pressed with a real leaf leaving a beautiful texture behind. The veins are highlighted with a little color. The leaves are destroyed during the affect so these truly are one of a kind. I tried to use matching sized leaves on these but each has its own flaws and details. Hung from surgical brace earwires they are featherlight and will sway as you act stamped with my 'sudlow' signature on the approve of one leaf. From earwires to tip they are a little over 3" (approx 8cm) desire. Comes in a little gift box ameliorate for giving
